F-35 Saudi Arabia Deal Raises US Concerns Over China Access

The F-35 Saudi Arabia deal is facing new security concerns after a confidential US intelligence assessment warned that China could potentially gain access to sensitive American military technology if Washington approves the proposed sale.

The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) developed the evaluation, according to The New York Times. The planned arrangement could provide Saudi Arabia with up to 48 F-35 stealth jets as part of a multibillion-dollar defence package.

F-35 Saudi Arabia Deal Faces China-Related Security Questions

The F-35 is one of the most modern fighter aircraft utilised by the United States. It blends stealth capabilities with modern radar, sensors, avionics, and systems that enable aircraft to exchange data.

US intelligence authorities are worried about Saudi Arabia’s growing defence and technology ties with Beijing. They are concerned that China’s military collaboration with Riyadh may provide possibilities for Beijing to learn more about the aircraft and its technologies.

The fear is not simply about China gaining direct access to an F-35. The audit also highlights potential threats from information gathering, military collaboration, and Saudi people working with Chinese technology.

Saudi Arabia maintains defence and technology partnerships with both the United States and China. Beijing has also supported Riyadh in building ballistic missile capabilities, raising Washington’s fears about the security of vital US military technologies.

Israel’s Military Advantage Is Another Issue

The planned fighter sale also includes the United States’ long-standing commitment to preserve Israel’s qualitative military advantage in the Middle East.

Israel is now the sole nation in the area using the F-35. Its aircraft, the F-35I, include Israeli military-specific upgrades.

The United States has maintained a strategy of preserving Israel’s military edge over other nations in the area. That pledge was formalised into US law in 2008.

US authorities have previously said that Saudi Arabia’s F-35 planes may not have the same capabilities as Israel’s jets. The Saudi aircraft may carry various weaponry and equipment, whilst Israel’s F-35I fleet contains country-specific modifications.

This implies that Washington would have to weigh both its defence alliance with Saudi Arabia and its current security responsibilities to Israel.

Security Measures Could Shape the F-35 Saudi Arabia Deal

The worries surrounding Saudi Arabia are identical to those that hampered a previous attempted F-35 sale to the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE transaction was met with criticism in Washington because to worries over Chinese participation in key areas of the country’s infrastructure, particularly 5G networks. US authorities were also worried that sensitive information relating to the fighter planes may be revealed.

If the Saudi deal goes forward, Washington may set stringent security requirements to preserve F-35 technology. Such measures might try to limit access to sensitive information while reducing the danger presented by third-party systems.

The potential sale is part of broader attempts by Washington and Riyadh to deepen their security and commercial ties. However, due to Saudi Arabia’s relations with China and Israel’s security concerns, the transfer of sophisticated US military equipment will be subject to additional examination.

The request for up to 48 aircraft has already cleared a major Pentagon barrier. However, further inspection is required before delivery can begin. According to Reuters, the first Saudi F-35 aircraft would not be delivered for many years if the agreement is approved.
