BRICS Summit 2026: PM Modi Pushes for Fewer Trade Barriers and More Business Partnerships

The BRICS Summit 2026 is being hosted by India in New Delhi from September 12 to September 13, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling for stronger economic cooperation among member countries. He has urged businesses across the group to reduce trade barriers, help startups expand and create more partnerships between companies.

Modi, speaking at the BRICS Business Forum, announced three priorities for the grouping to examine each year. These include identifying and reducing the top ten trade barriers between BRICS states, assisting 100 BRICS entrepreneurs to expand into other member markets each year, and forming 1,000 new business collaborations.

BRICS Summit 2026 Focuses on Trade and Economic Growth

Modi stated that BRICS has entered its third decade and should now focus more on real activity. He also emphasized India’s “Make in India, Innovate with India, Scale for the World” strategy, while advocating for deeper economic cooperation.

According to the Prime Minister, economic growth and reliable supply chains are inextricably linked to the security of shipping routes. His views come as disruptions caused by the US-Iran dispute in the Persian Gulf have impacted global trade and economics.

Modi also emphasized the growing economic importance of the BRICS countries. According to him, their economic strength has grown at about double the rate of the rest of the globe.

The India-Russia economic partnership continues to gather momentum.

In a social media post, Modi noted that BRICS represents about 50% of humanity and 40% of global GDP. He said the group should use the coming decade to turn its plans into concrete action.

BRICS Summit 2026 Highlights Growing Global Economic Role

During the summit-related discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the BRICS’ economic stance. He attacked Western sanctions, calling them “coercive economic pressure.”

Putin stated that the BRICS countries have contributed more than 40% of global GDP during the last five years. He compared this to the G7, which he put at 29%.

India and Russia also addressed their economic links. According to Modi, the two countries’ alliance is gaining speed. He and Putin had attended INNOPROM in Delhi, an event that brought together Indian and Russian companies.

Modi also met with Iranian President Masoud Pezhkian in Delhi. The two presidents addressed India-Iran relations and the importance of pursuing a long-term strategy that benefits both countries.

BRICS has evolved into a key forum for emerging economies to collaborate on topics such as trade, finance, technology, development, and global governance. The organization also offers its members a place to debate common concerns and promote the interests of the Global South.

In 2026, India will chair the BRICS for the fourth time. The 18th BRICS Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 under India’s theme of “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.” The agenda focuses on development, innovation, sustainability, and increased collaboration among member countries.
