US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could target Iran’s underground nuclear facility at Pickaxe Mountain “very soon” if American intelligence detects activity at the site. The Trump Pickaxe Mountain Iran nuclear site threat comes just days after US forces carried out strikes on Iranian military targets.
Trump made the remarks while speaking with reporters in the Oval Office on Friday. He stated that the primary purpose of the US military effort was to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
“We’re in five months now,” Trump remarked, claiming that US action prevented Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb. He also cautioned that a nuclear-armed Iran would be a severe threat to the region and beyond.
Trump Pickaxe Mountain Iran nuclear site threat
Trump stated that US intelligence was monitoring activity near Pickaxe Mountain and that American officials knew who was moving in and around the spot.
“If anything goes bad, we hit them; we hit them hard,” Trump declared. He went on to say that if the US suspected nuclear activity at the plant, it may take action against it quickly.
Pickaxe Mountain is located near Iran’s Natanz nuclear enrichment complex, which has already been severely damaged. The facility is thought to have two underground tunnel systems buried deep beneath the surface, making it tough to attack with traditional weapons.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Israeli intelligence believes Iran relocated thousands of centrifuges to the carefully underground complex. Any US strike on the site may thus signal a new phase in the battle against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Trump also supported the bigger US military effort, claiming that American engagement helped prevent a greater conflict in the Middle East. He stated that if the United States had not intervened, Iran would have posed a greater threat to Israel and other regional countries.
Recent US strikes on Iranian military targets
Trump’s warning came shortly after the US Central Command announced that American forces had launched another round of attacks against Iranian military sites.
According to CENTCOM, the operations targeted targets associated to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The targets included air defense systems, radar facilities, maritime equipment, mine-laying capabilities, and communication infrastructure.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes were in response to the IRGC’s attempted attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz as well as US military personnel.
Trump also talked about US attacks on Iranian radar equipment. He stated that American forces destroyed sophisticated radar equipment twice after Iran replaced previously targeted devices.
He said there had been little activity after the latest strike and suggested Iran may be reluctant to deploy additional radar systems because they could again become targets.
Iran condemns US military action
Iran has strongly opposed the recent US strikes. Tehran accused Washington of violating Iranian sovereignty, claiming that American forces had attacked non-military infrastructure and residential areas across many regions.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its armed forces have launched “crushing defensive strikes” against US military bases in West Asia. Tehran said that those bases were being used to launch, support, and plan US military actions against Iran.
