A video obtained by the independent newswire outlet Freedomnews showed the moment one suspect handed the device to another, just before an arrest was made outside the mansion. According to authorities, the seized device was a black tape-wrapped container containing nuts, bolts, screws, and a fuse.

These arrests were part of a larger police operation in which six people were apprehended after a chaotic clash between different protest groups at the official house.

The violence occurred when an anti-Islam demonstration arranged by right-wing blogger Jake Lang clashed with a larger counter-protest during Ramadan, resulting in the ignition and deployment of two “suspicious” devices, CNN claimed.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica S Tisch said that these devices, which were characterised as little smaller than a football, are currently being investigated to see whether they were viable homemade bombs or hoaxes.

According to CNN, Commissioner Tisch stated during a press conference that “witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke as it travelled through the air before it struck a barrier and extinguished itself a few feet from police officers.”

According to CNN, an examination into whether the devices included “energetic material” is underway to determine the exact level of hazard to individuals present. The escalation reportedly began shortly after lunchtime, when an anti-Islam group member allegedly sprayed pepper spray on counter-protesters.

CNN stated that around 20 minutes later, an 18-year-old counterprotester “lit and threw an ignited device toward the protest area,” which landed on a crosswalk.

After the initial throw, the suspect allegedly raced to a 19-year-old associate to fetch a second device. He also lighted the second object before dropping it on the street, as authorities moved in to secure the scene. Both males were among the six people arrested during the police raid.

Following the incident, CNN reported that Mayor Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, were safe. A spokesperson for the mayor termed the Lang-organized gathering as “despicable and Islamophobic,” adding that the incidents served as a “sharp reminder of the threats they both face on a regular basis.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that she had been updated on the issue, noting that while the state respects the right to peaceful protest, “zero tolerance for hate or violence” exists. Police have stressed that there is no present indication that the incident is related to existing international tensions.
