Zohran Mamdani Viral Inaugural Speech : "Logon Ke Dil Badal Gaye".

Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani took his oath of office as Mayor of New York City, becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to lead the country’s largest city. In his inaugural speech, the 34-year-old emphasized unity and promised to serve all people, regardless of religion or support for his election.

In a tribute to his South Asian background, Mamdani recounted the words of one of his followers in Hindi, who informed him that his election campaign promoted “softness in people’s hearts”. The video of his remarks has gone popular on social media.

In his inauguration speech to thousands of New Yorkers and political luminaries, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the democratic socialist outlined a governing agenda centered on working-class people and the challenge of affordability.

Mamdani described recent experiences with New Yorkers that influenced his affordability-focused approach. At the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, he listened to “New Yorkers from every borough as they told me about their city.” They discussed, among other things, “affordable housing for artists”.

During that encounter, Mamdani said he spoke with a Pakistani woman called Samina, who described a deeper shift in the city. “I chatted with a Pakistani auntie named Samina, who informed me that this movement had produced something really rare: kindness in people’s hearts. As she stated in Hindi, ‘Logon ke dil badal gaye hain’ (people’s hearts have changed).

Putting such experiences at the heart of his governing philosophy, Mamdani declared, “Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously,” adding that his administration would pursue an agenda centered on safety, affordability, and plenty.

“In the years ahead, my administration will revive that tradition. City Hall will offer an agenda of safety, affordability, and plenty, in which government looks and lives like the people it serves, never backs down in the fight against corporate greed, and refuses to shrink in the face of difficulties that others have considered too complex.”

He also promised to serve all locals, even those who did not support his campaign. “If you are a New Yorker, I am the mayor… Whether or not we agree, I will protect you, celebrate with you, weep with you, and never abandon you.

Mamdani also linked affordability to issues of belonging and inclusion. “In so doing, we shall provide our own response to the age-old question: who owns New York? Well, my friends, we can go to Madiba and the South African Freedom Charter to see that New York belongs to everyone who lives there. Together, we will tell a new tale about our city.

Mamdani also stated that economic restrictions have traditionally restricted freedom in the city. “For far too long in our city, freedom has been limited to those who can pay to buy it. “Our City Hall will change that,” he declared.

He also emphasized the social part of his plan, stating that his government would not only assist New Yorkers in affording a higher standard of living, but would also “overcome the isolation that too many feel and connect the people of this city to one another.”

Mandani expressed inclusivity by saying, “The authors of this story will speak Pashto, Mandarin, Yiddish, and Creole.” He went on to say that New Yorkers will either pray in mosques, churches, synagogues, gurdwaras, mandirs, and temples, or not at all.

Mamdani’s family and political allies joined him on stage during the ceremony. His father, Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani; mother, director Mira Nair; and wife, artist Rama Duwaji, were all present. Governor Kathy Hochul, who backed Mamdani in September 2025 and is likely to play a key role in pushing his affordability program, was also present.
