Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s two-day travel to India, speculations suggest that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could visit New Delhi as early as January 2026 . The potential visit can be considered as part of India’s cautious diplomatic balancing act, which involves maintaining relations with both Russia and Ukraine despite the ongoing conflict. India has taken a measured approach to its relations with both countries.

Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Putin in Moscow in July, and the following month travel to Ukraine , he traveled to Ukraine for the first time ever an Indian Prime Minister since diplomatic relations were established in 1992.
According to the article, conversations between Indian and Ukrainian officials have been going on for several weeks, with New Delhi collaborating closely with Zelenskyy’s office even before Putin’s arrival.

India’s stand in the dispute

Following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ukraine in August last year, a joint declaration revealed both countries’ intentions to upgrade bilateral relations from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic one in the future.
PM Modi and Zelenskyy have maintained regular communication, including a bilateral summit in New York in September 2024 and several phone discussions, with both leaders deliberately avoiding terminology like “war” or “conflict,” instead referring to the situation in Ukraine as a “crisis.”
It is worth noting that Ukraine has only sent its presidents to India three times before, in 1992, 2002, and 2012, making Zelenskyy’s visit a significant event in diplomatic history.
