Violence Flares in Mexico After El Mencho’s Death; US Visitors Told to Avoid Key Areas

Mexico Travel Alert : The US has issued an urgent warning for Americans in portions of Mexico following the assassination of ‘El Mencho’, one of the world’s most sought drug lords. The operation targeted a strong cartel boss.Due to ongoing security operations, road closures, and criminal activity, U.S. residents in the identified places should shelter in place until further notice, according to the state department’s security alert.

The US State Department issued warnings to citizens in various Mexican states, including Jalisco (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas (including Reynosa and other municipalities), Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon. Officials also advised travellers and locals to stay indoors and alert while authorities monitor the situation.

Regarding El Mencho death

The Mexican Ministry of National Defence acknowledged the death of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes in an official statement. Known as “El Mencho,” he was slain on February 22 during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.

The 59-year-old crime boss was the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which has recently developed into one of Mexico’s most powerful and feared criminal organisations.

He was born on July 17, 1966, in Aguililla, Michoacán, Mexico. He later became one of the country’s most sought-after fugitives. In 2009, he established the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which grew to become one of Mexico’s most powerful and dangerous drug trafficking organisations.

He was one of the world’s most wanted fugitives, with Mexico and the United States offering substantial rewards for information leading to his capture. The US State Department offered a $15 million prize.

Under his command, the cartel managed significant quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl into the United States. The organization was also tied to several murders, attacks on rival cartels, assaults on law enforcement agents, and assassination attempts on government leaders.
