US F-35 Makes Emergency Landing After Being Struck During Iran Operation

DUBAI: A US F-35 stealth fighter jet was hit by what is thought to be Iranian fire, forcing it to make an emergency landing at an American air base in the Middle East. This could be a major escalation in the current conflict.

Tehran may have successfully targeted a US plane for the first time in the battle, according to two people with knowledge of the situation who spoke to CNN. The fifth-generation aircraft was struck during an Iran combat mission.

The aircraft was flying over Iran when it was ordered to land, according to US Central Command, which confirmed the occurrence.

CENTCOM spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins stated, “The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot is in stable condition.” “This incident is being looked into.”

The F-35’s sophisticated stealth characteristics, which are intended to avoid radar and air defence systems, make the breakthrough noteworthy even though there are still little information available.

If verified, it would be the first time Iran has attacked a US aircraft since the conflict started in late February, possibly indicating a change in the battlefield.

F-35 fighter jets have been widely used by both the US and Israel in operations against Iran, where they are used for deep-penetration missions and precision strikes.

The aircraft, which may cost up to $100 million, is regarded as one of the world’s most sophisticated combat aircraft.

Senior US officials are still projecting confidence in the campaign at the time of the tragedy.

Iran’s air defence systems have been “flattened,” according to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who stated on Thursday that the United States is “winning decisively.”

If confirmed, the claimed attack on an F-35 might cast doubt on Iran’s residual capabilities and complicate the story.

US casualties in the conflict thus far

Since the beginning of the Iran war, at least 16 US military aircraft have been lost or damaged, including 10 destroyed Reaper drones, according to Bloomberg. Despite official assertions of battlefield dominance, six further aircraft were damaged in strikes or accidents, underscoring the operating risks.

Other US aircraft have also been lost throughout the battle, though none of them have been officially acknowledged to have been struck by enemy fire. All six crew members safely evacuated after Kuwaiti air defences accidentally fired down three F-15 fighter jets.

All six people on board were killed when a KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq last week. The event was “not due to hostile fire or friendly fire,” according to the US military, and the cause is still being looked into.

The most recent F-35 mishap coincides with growing concerns about the conflict’s course and potential outcomes. As previously reported by CNN, officials have confirmed the deployment of the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Okinawa to the area. Recently, the USS Tripoli was spotted getting closer to Singapore.

As the third week of the battle draws to a close, senior US officials are still projecting confidence. Iran’s air defence systems have been “flattened,” according to defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who also issued a warning that a fresh round of strikes would be “the largest strike package yet.”

Hegseth called the campaign, code-named Operation Epic Fury, “laser-focussed” and “decisive” during a Pentagon briefing. He also stated that the United States is winning the fight “decisively and on our terms.”
