Assassination Plot : According to the New York Post, a Pakistani national accused of conspiring to assassinate American political officials claimed that Iranian intelligence operatives pressured him into a plot against Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

Asif Merchant, 47, told the court on Wednesday that he was coerced into the plot to protect his relatives.

During his testimony in a Brooklyn federal court, the defendant, who faces terrorism and murder-for-hire charges, indicated that he felt forced to act. “I had no other choices. My family was threatened, Merchant told the jurors.

The accused, a former banker, allegedly gave two undercover FBI agents posing as assassins USD 5,000.

According to the New York Post, Merchant stated that in April 2024, an Iranian handler directed him to fly to the United States to “maybe have somebody murdered.”

Merchant stated that three identities were provided, notwithstanding the handler’s initial failure to specify one.He didn’t tell me who it was, but he did name three people: Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Nikki Haley,” he explained.

Trump and Biden were the front-runners for the 2024 presidential election at the time.

Since his arrest in August 2024, Merchant has maintained a not guilty plea. He claimed to have already assisted the Iranian leadership in using money laundering to avoid sanctions.

He identified his handler as Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps member Mehrdad Yousef, according to the New York Post.

Merchant claimed that Yousef’s “pressure” on his Iranian family members was the reason for his cooperation.

He recalled an intimidating interaction in which Yousef visited his home and flashed a firearm, but he did not go into depth about specific threats against his wife and children in Iran.He told the court, “I had to do this because my family was in danger.”

According to the New York Post, security footage from June 2024 captured Merchant talking about the plot’s mechanics in a Queens motel and questioning a target, “This is the target.” How is it going to die?

Merchant said he never thought the scheme would work and expected to get caught himself.

“I didn’t think I would be able to be successful,” he said. He said, “I was not wanting to do this so willingly.”

He added that the plot’s lack of reality was demonstrated by the USD 5,000 payment, pointing out that “nobody does anybody’s murder” for such a meagre sum.

His assertion that he had been “mentally ready” to be apprehended and planned to assist US authorities was emphasised by the New York Post.He added, “I wanted to apply for a green card. I was going to tell the government.”

The merchant might be sentenced to life in prison if proven guilty, and his cross-examination is set for this Thursday.
