Taiwan Reports Presence of Five Chinese Naval Vessels in Surrounding Seas

Chinese naval vessels : Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence reported Monday that five Chinese naval boats were operating near its territorial seas as of 6 a.m.

According to a post on X, the Taiwanese MND identified no Chinese military aircraft throughout the timeframe due to a lack of PLA aircraft operating in the territory.Up to 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today, five PLAN vessels were observed around Taiwan. The ROC Armed Forces monitored and responded to the situation. The MND noted in a post on X that an illustration of the flight path is not supplied because no PLA aircraft were spotted operating over Taiwan at this time period.

Earlier on Sunday, around 6 a.m., the Taiwanese MND reported the presence of two Chinese military aircraft flights and six Chinese naval vessels operating in its territorial seas.

One of the two PLA aircraft flights crossed the middle line and entered Taiwan’s northern Air Defence Identification Zone.Two PLA aircraft sorties and six PLAN boats operating around Taiwan were identified as of 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. One out of every two sorties breached the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern ADIZ. The ROC Armed Forces have observed the situation and responded,” the MND wrote in a post on X.

Meanwhile, an Anzac-class warship from Australia, a US ally, transited the Taiwan Strait, according to a Chinese military source. The frigate was tracked and watched throughout the transit.

A Chinese military source told the Global Times that the Royal Australian Navy vessel HMAS Toowoomba passed through the Taiwan Straits on February 20 and 21.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted full-process tracking, monitoring, and alarm activities during the passage, according to Chinese official media.

According to a Taipei Times report dated December 2025, eight countries sent armed warships over the Taiwan Strait last year.

Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB) Director-General Tsai Ming-yen told the Taipei Times in December that the US, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, the UK, and France would all send military warships via the Taiwan Strait this year (2025).

The officer went on to say that the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia all participated in two combined operations.

Beijing regards the vital strait as Chinese territorial waters, which Taiwan claims.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn (DDG 113) and the Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship USNS Mary Sears (T-AGS 65) previously transited the Taiwan Strait, according to a statement from the US 7th Fleet.
