Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has stated that the main purpose of the ruling elite today is to vilify Jawaharlal Nehru, accusing the BJP of attempting to remove the country’s first prime minister from history.
The BJP responded by claiming that the Congress had undervalued Nehru’s contribution and had only highlighted efforts to cover up his “mistakes” rather than disrespecting him.
Sonia Gandhi accuses BJP discredit Nehru
Gandhi claimed during the launch of the Nehru Centre India at Jawahar Bhawan that there was a systematic campaign to degrade, misrepresent, demean, and discredit Nehru.
“What is not acceptable is the systematic attempt being made to denigrate, distort, demean and defame him,” she pointed out.
“The sole objective of this is to not only diminish him as a personality but also his universally recognised role in India’s independence struggle and his early decades as a leader of an independent nation challenged by unprecedented problems, but it is also to demolish his multifaceted legacy in a crude and self serving attempt to rewrite history,” she said. She deemed such attempts “totally unacceptable.”
She said that individuals behind the initiative to denigrate Nehru adhere to an ideology that played no role in the freedom fight or the constitution’s writing, and that they produced an atmosphere conducive to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination.
“There is no doubt that the ruling establishment’s primary goal today is to discredit Jawaharlal Nehru. The Congress Parliamentary Party chairwoman stated that their goal is not only to delete him, but also to demolish the social, political, and economic pillars upon which our nation was created and built.
Gandhi went on to say that Nehru continues to be a source of inspiration for millions of Indians, and that it is natural for such a monumental man to have his life and work studied and evaluated, which she believes is absolutely proper.
She observed that the tendency to isolate Nehru from the context of his period and the issues he encountered, and to study him without that historical perspective, has grown common.
