Steve Witkoff, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, met with Reza Pahlavi, the eldest son of Iran’s previous Shah, over the weekend, according to a report published on Tuesday.
First documented interaction between senior Trump administration officials and Reza Pahlavi
The meeting is the first documented interaction between senior Trump administration officials and Pahlavi since widespread demonstrations erupted in Iran.
According to an American official, the frequent mention of Pahlavi’s name during recent demonstrations surprised the US administration. Pahlavi has become more visible in American media in recent weeks, establishing himself as a key opposition figure during the unrest, though Trump allegedly declined to formally endorse him in a recent interview.
The Pahlavi dynasty ruled Iran from 1925 until the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when the Shah fled to Egypt and died there in 1980. Reza Pahlavi, his son, has spent much of his life overseas and remains a contentious figure in Iranian politics.

Protests erupted in Iran last month as the country’s economic problems worsened, including surging inflation and a severe depreciation of the rial, its national currency. Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of inciting the disturbance, describing some of the demonstrations as “riots” and acts of “terrorism.”
While Iranian officials have not disclosed official mortality counts, the Human Rights Activists News Agency, based in the United States, says that at least 646 people have been killed, including protestors and security officers, with over 1,000 injured. The group also cites around 10,721 detentions in 585 locations across the country.
The purported interaction between Trump’s entourage and Pahlavi adds a fresh diplomatic layer to the problem. It comes as Washington maintains diplomatic and economic pressure on Tehran while closely monitoring events on the ground. The level of US involvement remains a source of controversy, with Tehran accusing foreign powers of interfering and destabilizing operations.
The situation in Iran remains unstable, with protests, official responses, and international reactions all shaping a constantly changing political picture.
