Reza Pahlavi Says Democratic Iran Will Strengthen Ties With India

Reza Pahlavi, Iran’s exiled crown prince, said on Friday that a democratic Iran would seek close and mutually beneficial relations with India.

Speaking at a news conference, Pahlavi said, “A democratic Iran is committed to having the best possible relationship—based on sovereignty and liberty—with countries that share the same values and are willing to work and partner with us across multiple domains.”

Pahlavi noted that Iran and India have maintained positive ties throughout modern history. He recalled that former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had visited Iran decades ago.

“I was very young at the time, but this shows that the relationship goes back a long way,” he said.

He praised India’s rich civilisational heritage, saying both nations could take pride in their historical legacy.

“We see a deep and vibrant culture and history in India as well. As nations, we can be proud of our past, which can naturally lead to a strong partnership and meaningful cooperation,” Pahlavi said.

Highlighting global challenges, Pahlavi said greater international cooperation was essential and that India would play a crucial role.

“Our world faces many challenges—energy shortages, population pressures, and a growing water crisis,” he said.

Reza Pahlavi Highlights India’s Strength in Technology and Energy

Pahlavi described India as a powerhouse of technology and expertise, adding that future cooperation could expand into renewable energy and other emerging sectors.

“I look forward to closer engagement between our experts, entrepreneurs, and business communities and their Indian counterparts,” he said.

“Hopefully, once we are free, we can begin an entirely new chapter,” he added.

Iran and India share centuries-old cultural, literary, linguistic, and trade ties and remained close for much of the twentieth century. However, relations shifted following the 1979 Islamic Revolution and have since been shaped by regional politics, international sanctions, and energy concerns.
