On the occasion of MG Ramachandran’s birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary leader and actor. PM Modi praised MGR’s contributions to Tamil Nadu’s development and his efforts to promote Tamil culture, adding that the government would continue working to fulfill his social vision.

The Prime Minister also shared a video message honoring MGR’s legacy and influence.
Who Was MG Ramachandran (MGR)?
Marudur Gopala Menon Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, was born on January 17, 1917, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, to Maruthur Gopala Menon and Satyabhama, both natives of Kerala.
An actor-turned-politician, MGR founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972 after a split with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led by M. Karunanidhi. He served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for nearly a decade, from 1977 to 1987. MGR was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1988.
MGR’s Film Career and Achievements
MGR made his acting debut in the 1936 film Sathi Leelavathi, directed by Ellis R. Dungan. He gained widespread fame with the 1954 film Malaikkallan.
In 1972, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Rickshawkaran and also received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for Adimaippenn.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit West Bengal and Assam on January 17 and 18.
At around 12:45 pm on January 17, Narendra Modi will visit Malda, where he will flag off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train between Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya) from Malda Town Railway Station. Later, at approximately 1:45 pm, he will lay the foundation stone and dedicate multiple rail and road infrastructure projects worth over ₹3,250 crore at a public event in Malda.
On January 18, Narendra Modi will also inaugurate two new Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Guwahati (Kamakhya) with Rohtak, and Dibrugarh with Lucknow (Gomti Nagar).
