Lower Berths Rules on Trains: Millions of people travel by train each day around the country. The railways are continually adding amenities to make passengers’ journeys easier. The railways have made substantial changes to make travel more convenient, particularly for senior citizens, women over 45, and pregnant passengers. Previously, failing to select a lower berth while reserving a ticket could complicate the travel.

Now, the technology is so sophisticated that if you fall into one of these categories, the lower berth will be booked for you automatically, as long as there is a vacant seat. Who will get the lesser berths for senior citizens?
The Railways have prioritized three types of passengers for this new facility. First, consider senior individuals, who may find it difficult to ascend steps. Second, ladies over the age of 45 prefer lower berths for longer journeys. Third, pregnant ladies have difficulty accessing middle or upper berths. When these three guests book, the system will automatically seek to allocate them lower berths. If a lower berth is not available at the time of booking, the TTE will assign them an empty lower berth in the train.

How many lower berths are reserved in various coaches?
According to the Railway Ministry, each coach has a set number of lower berths allocated ahead of time. Sleeper has around six to seven lower berths dedicated specifically for this group. Four to five lower beds are reserved in the third AC, whereas three to four lower berths are blocked individually in the second. Senior persons, women over the age of 45, and pregnant travelers are given precedence in obtaining these seats. This means that the system prioritizes their requirements first, followed by other passengers’.
Special Accommodations for Disabled Passengers and Accompanying Persons
The railways already have a special quota for disabled passengers, which has now been defined. This category has four seats reserved in Sleeper and Third AC, two of which are lower beds. They also have four seats reserved in the 2S and Chair Car. The accompanying attendant is likewise assigned a seat, guaranteeing a smooth travel. If a lower berth is available on the train, it is first reserved for senior citizens, disabled travelers, and pregnant women.
