Layoffs : Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Eternal, the parent company of Zomato, revealed that the company’s food delivery platform lets go of nearly 5,000 contract workers every month. He shared this information during a podcast conversation with YouTuber Raj Shamani.
Millions of contract workers are voluntarily leaving their employment.
He further noted that, in addition to layoffs, between 150,000 and 200,000 gig workers leave their positions willingly each month. Furthermore, the corporation hires between 150,000 and 200,000 new employees per month. Until the fourth quarter, food delivery was Eternal’s largest operation, but its rapid commerce unit, Blinkit, surpassed it.
However, Gurugram-based Zomato remains the company’s primary revenue generator. Aside from Zomato and Blinkit, Eternal operates a going out company under the district label and a business-to-business (B2B) grocery supply segment called Hyperpure.
Reasons for massive layoffs.
Deepinder commented on the significant number of persons leaving their delivery employment, saying, “Many people consider this a transitory position. Some people do this work because they urgently need money, but then leave once they have earned enough.”
Speaking of large-scale layoffs, Deepinder stated that fraudulent activities frequently result from occurrences such as delivery partners displaying food as delivered when it has not been delivered, or occasions where consumers are promised change for cash-on-delivery purchases but never receive it.

Stand on Benefits for Contract Workers
He also talked against the benefits offered to contract workers, claiming that demanding PF or a guaranteed salary for contract workers, as opposed to full-time employees, is improper for the model it was built for. This is due to the fact that delivery partners do not work set shifts or are assigned to a specific area. They select when to log in and out and where to deliver within the city. They select their own locations. They have the discretion to add or delete work sites as they see fit.
