Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, has made one of the most stark admissions of Islamabad’s past alliance with the United States, accusing Washington of “exploiting” the Southeast Asian nation for strategic interests and then discarding it “like a piece of toilet paper” once its goals were met. Speaking in Pakistan’s National Assembly, Asif stated that Pakistan frequently rejects its terror history, referring to it as a “mistake committed by dictators of the past.”
The Pakistani minister also called Islamabad’s involvement in two Afghan wars ‘a mistake,’ claiming that terrorism in Pakistan now was the result of previous blunders.
Khawaja Asif Says : On the Pakistan-US alliance
Asif pondered on Pakistan’s post-1999 realignment with Washington, particularly in relation to Afghanistan, which he said caused long-term damage to the country.
He stated that the costs of realigning with the United States after 1999, particularly in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, were severe. “Pakistan was treated worse than a piece of toilet paper and was used for a purpose and then thrown away,” claimed the diplomat.

The Defence Minister observed that Islamabad again partnered with Washington in the US-led Afghan war after 2001, turning against the Taliban in the process. He stated that while the US eventually withdrew from the region, Pakistan was left to deal with ongoing violence, radicalism, and economic distress.

Afghan Mistakes
Asif also questioned the official narrative that Pakistan’s engagement in the Afghan conflict was motivated by religious responsibility. He accepted that Pakistanis were dispatched to fight under the banner of jihad, but called the framing deceptive and destructive.
He explained to the Parliament how “two former military dictators (Zia-ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf) had joined the war in Afghanistan, not for the sake of Islam, but to appease a superpower.”We ignore our history and refuse to embrace our mistakes. Terrorism is a result of the mistakes made by dictators in the past,” the minister stated.
“The losses we suffered can never be compensated,” Asif continued, calling Pakistan’s mistakes ‘irreversible’.
Asif also asserted that Pakistan’s education system was modified to justify these wars, with ideological alterations that are still present today.
