Iran Airspace Closure Prompts Advisory From Indian Airlines Amid US-Iran Strain

Iran Airspace Closure: On Thursday, Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet announced that several of their international flights were affected after Iran closed its airspace amid widespread protests against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and escalating tensions with the United States.

Air India informed passengers on X (formerly Twitter) about possible delays for flights overflying the region, along with cancellations where rerouting was not feasible.

“Due to the evolving situation in Iran and the subsequent closure of its airspace, and in the interest of passenger safety, Air India flights overflying the region are being rerouted, which may result in delays,” the airline said. “Some Air India flights are being cancelled as rerouting is currently not possible.”

The airline advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

IndiGo also said in an early Thursday post that several of its international flights were impacted by Iran’s “sudden airspace closure.”

“This situation is beyond our control, and we regret the inconvenience caused to your travel plans. If your flight is affected, we recommend visiting our website to explore flexible rebooking options or request a refund,” it added.

Iran had previously closed its airspace during a 12-day conflict with Israel in June, as well as during the Israel-Hamas war.

“Several airlines have already reduced or suspended services, and most carriers are avoiding Iranian airspace,” aviation risk monitoring website SafeAirspace said. “The situation may indicate further security or military activity, including the risk of missile launches or heightened air defence operations, increasing the danger of misidentification of civilian aircraft.”
