Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has called for a nationwide protest a day after being convicted to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana 2 corruption case with his wife Bushra Bibi. In a conversation with his lawyers that was posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the 73-year-old stated that his supporters should stand up for him in protest of the decision.

However, because Khan has internet connection in jail, it is unclear who placed the message on X.

The former prime minister stated that the sentence would be contested in the high court, while also criticizing the Pakistan Army for’mentally abusing’ him and his wife. Khan claimed that every prisoner in the jail can watch television, but he and his wife do not have access to one.

“The Toshakhana-II ruling, like the previous three years’ bogus decisions and penalties, is not new to me. “The judge made this decision in haste, without any evidence and without meeting the legal requirements,” Khan stated.

The Justice Lawyers Forum and the Lawyers’ Front must take the lead in the campaign to restore the supremacy of law and the Constitution. People can only be protected by the court system. He went on to say that without it, neither economic advancement nor moral development are conceivable.

Khan has been in custody since August 2023. He and Bushra were sentenced to 17 years in prison on Saturday in the Toshakhana 2 corruption case, which involves the couple’s alleged wrongdoing in state gifts obtained from the Saudi government in 2021. The Toshakhana is a department inside the Pakistani Cabinet Division that houses gifts given to rulers and government officials by heads of other governments and international dignitaries.
