Jalisco: Authorities reported that Mexico’s most sought drug kingpin, Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, died after being injured in a military operation in Jalisco.

The strike targeted the leader of the formidable Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), and it was followed by violent retaliation throughout many districts.

According to Mexico’s Defence Minister Ricardo Trevilla, detectives tracked down the cartel commander using information gleaned from the travels of a trusted colleague linked to one of his amorous partners. Officials followed her to a secluded compound near the mountain hamlet of Tapalpa. After she left, security forces assumed that Oseguera remained inside under strong guard and initiated an operation immediately.

The next day, troops encircled the property. Gunmen loyal to Oseguera opened fire before following him into a nearby forest. He was found seriously injured, along with others of his inner group. Oseguera and two bodyguards were airlifted for treatment but died en way, according to Trevilla during a government briefing.

Within hours after the operation, CJNG fighters began a coordinated attack. Roads were barricaded, vehicles were set on fire, businesses were targeted, and security officers were ambushed. According to Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch, at least 25 National Guard members were slain in Jalisco, as were approximately 30 suspected cartel members. Dozens of arrests ensued as authorities attempted to restore order.

Over the years, Oseguera built CJNG into one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organisations, spreading its tentacles across the country and playing a significant part in the trafficking of fentanyl and other drugs into the US.
