On Saturday, US President Donald Trump threatened’very harsh consequences’ after three Americans – two military and a civilian – were murdered in an ambush in Syria. The Republican leader blamed the ambush on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and said it had left his Syrian colleague Ahmed al-Sharaa ‘very unhappy’.

In a Truth Social post, Donald Trump wrote:

“We mourn the loss of three Great American Patriots in Syria, two soldiers and one civilian interpreter,” Trump stated in a Truth Social post. “Likewise, we pray for the three injured soldiers who, it has just been confirmed, are doing well.”

“This was an ISIS attack on the United States and Syria, in a highly dangerous area of Syria that they do not entirely control. The Syrian President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is outraged and horrified by the incident. There will be severe retaliation. “Thank you for your concentration to this matter,” he ended.

According to the US military, the strike was carried out by a single ISIS terrorist. It also injured three other military, who, according to Trump, are “doing pretty well”. Meanwhile, US forces neutralised the aggressor. Notably, this was the first lethal attack on American soldiers in Syria after Bashar Assad’s fall.

According to Pentagon top spokesperson Sean Parnell, an IS militant opened fire at the military base’s entrance, killing two soldiers involved in counter-terrorism operations in the vicinity. In terms of civilian employment, he worked as an interpreter for the United States military.

The Syrian military said that the attack injured some of its soldiers. It stated that it is probing whether the gunman was an IS member or simply carried its extremist ideology. Currently, hundreds of US troops are stationed in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting ISIS.
