On Friday , US President Donald Trump released a scathing tirade against Canada, criticizing its opposition to his ambitious “Golden Dome” missile defense barrier over Greenland while cozying up to China. Trump accused Prime Minister Mark Carney of being ungrateful for US security “freebies,” warning that Beijing may swallow its northern neighbour in a year due to rising economic spats and geopolitical rifts.
Donald Trump Targets Canada’s Greenland Stance on Truth Social
In a scathing Truth Social post, Trump fumed, “Canada is opposed to the Golden Dome being built above Greenland, despite the fact that the Golden Dome would defend Canada. Instead, they opted to do business with China, who will ‘eat them up’ in the first year!”
The reaction came after Carney’s World Economic Forum (WEF) statements in Davos, in which he lambasted the fading “rules-based order” and tariff coercion, both of which were clear digs at Trump’s Greenland goals and trade strategies. Trump responded during the WEF summit, saying, “Canada receives a lot of freebies from us…” They should be grateful to us,” adding, “Canada exists because of the United States. “Remember that, Mark.”
Carney’s China trade tilt incites US wrath.
On January 17, Carney announced a historic trade agreement with China, opening almost $7 billion in export markets for Canadian companies. The agreement reduces Canada’s 100% tax on Chinese EVs, which is first limited to 49,000 units and will increase to 70,000 over five years, in exchange for Beijing lowering canola seed tariffs from 84% to 15%.

Carney praised China as “more predictable” than the turbulent United States, which imposes 35% tariffs on commodities, 50% on metals, and 25% on non-US automobiles. His office presented it as economic resilience: “In a divided world, Canada is diversifying… China represents enormous opportunities.” Trump perceives this as betrayal, particularly given his proposed “Golden Dome” Arctic missile barrier, which is intended to protect North America, including Canada, from attacks.

WEF conflict reveals widening US-Canada rifts.
Trump’s WEF address on Wednesday emphasized thankfulness for US protections, presenting the Golden Dome as a shared benefit. Carney’s response emphasized “great power rivalry,” as he resisted US pressure on Greenland, a strategically important mineral-rich territory that Trump desires.
Sino-US tariff warfare intensify: both promised 100% increases, but Trump-Xi discussions exempted some Chinese imports until November 10. Canada, caught in the conflict, leans east, which irritates the US president, who sees it as existential reliance.
