Bihar assembly speaker : Prem Kumar was unanimously chosen as Bihar Legislative Assembly’s 18th Speaker. Opposition legislators also supported him. Prem Kumar filed his candidacy for the position yesterday. He was the only candidate for the office, hence his uncontested election was assumed.

Prem Kumar has become the third Speaker from the BJP quota, following Vijay Kumar Sinha and Nand Kishore Yadav. Two JD(U) leaders, Uday Narayan Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Choudhary, have previously spoken.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulated Prem Kumar on his election, saying: “I congratulate Prem Kumar ji on behalf of the entire House.” He has extensive experience and will fully participate in the operation of the House. I suggest that the entire House stand and show him respect.

Prem, who holds a PhD in history and an LLB from Magadh University, has had a long career in Bihar politics, serving in different government positions and as opposition leader. He was a minister in several areas, including public health engineering, road building, urban development, agricultural, and environment, forest and climate change. In the previous administration, he served as cabinet minister for the cooperative department. Between 2015 and 2017, he led the opposition. He has remained undefeated in Gaya Town since 1990 and enjoys widespread support, particularly among EBC groups.

Prem Kumar won the Gaya Town seat for the ninth time in a row with 90,878 votes in the 2025 assembly election, defeating Congress candidate Akhaury Onkar Nath by 26,423.
