Bangladesh Elections : Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) has stated that the country’s next general election will take place on February 12, 2026. This is the first national election after the 2024 uprising that deposed the previous government, heralding a watershed moment for democratic change under the interim administration.

Bangladesh Elections date confirmed

On Thursday (December 11), Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin stated that Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election will take place on February 12. This is the country’s first general election since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August 2024 amid violent student protests. “The voting will take place on Thursday, February 12, 2026,” the CEC announced emphatically.

The vote will take place from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The deadline to submit nominations is Monday, December 29. The election campaign will take place from January 22 until February 10. Over 12.76 crore voters will exercise their rights. The Election Commission will offer postal ballots for Bangladeshis living overseas.

Announcement and timetable shift

The decision to hold elections in early February was reached after negotiations between the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus and key political groups. The date was originally scheduled for later in the year, but was moved up to coincide with Ramadan, assuring a timely transition to an elected administration. Yunus urged the Election Commission (EC) to prepare for a fair, peaceful vote with a high turnout, emphasizing institutional and mental preparations beginning immediately.

Challenges in securing free and fair elections.

Election officials recognize substantial challenges, including rebuilding voter faith undermined by previous faulty elections in the last 15 years. The Commission works diligently to update voter lists, improve security, and promote inclusivity for women and youth. Major groups such as the BNP are taking strong positions, while the outlawed Awami League is unlikely to participate, changing the political landscape.

The polls come after large protests ended Sheikh Hasina’s long rule, and the interim administration issued a 26-point “July declaration” calling for governance and constitutional reforms. In addition to the elections, a referendum on this charter will be held. Tens of thousands of people celebrated the anniversary of the uprising in Dhaka amid tight security, demonstrating the public’s desire for change.

Authorities encourage all parties to join for openness, with the specific schedule to be finalized two months in advance. To make this election memorable, the focus will be on peace, high participation, and settling past grievances.
