Ottawa [Canada] : On Monday, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that she will accompany Prime Minister Mark Carney on his visit to India later this month, noting that the two nations will diversify trade and create new opportunities.
Anita Anand said in a post for X
“I will be returning to India with the Prime Minister this week to further diversify trade and to unlock additional opportunities for Canadians, including by elevating all sectors of the Canadian economy and enhancing our people-to-people ties,” Anita Anand said in a post for X.
She included a press release announcing PM Carney’s trip to India, Australia, and Japan.
“In a more divided and uncertain world, Canada’s new government is focusing on what it can control. We are developing a stronger, more self-sufficient, and resilient economy. According to the statement, we are strengthening our domestic economy, diversifying our commerce, and attracting significant international investment.
To this purpose, Prime Minister Mark Carney said that he will travel to India, Australia, and Japan from February 26 to March 7, 2026, to open up new prospects for Canadian workers and firms in trade, energy, technology, and military. The Prime Minister’s visits to three of Canada’s most important Indo-Pacific allies will strengthen regional ties that are crucial to our security and prosperity, it stated.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Carney will also meet with business leaders and investors to encourage fresh money into Canada and promote bilateral trade and investment with Australia.
Prime Minister Carney will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in Tokyo to discuss ways to increase mutual investment and collaboration in renewable energy, sophisticated manufacturing, essential minerals, and food security. The leaders will also address how to deepen cooperation security and defence initiatives, including support for a free and open Indo-Pacific.
“Canada offers everything the world wants: abundant energy, crucial resources, technological expertise, and world-class talent. In a changing world, we are investing in our strength, diversifying our trade, and building a thick web of new links around the world to help Canada grow,” the statement stated.
India is the world’s fastest growing major economy, as well as a global economic and technological powerhouse. In 2024, India was Canada’s seventh-largest goods and services trading partner, with a two-way trade of $30.8 billion.
At last year’s G20 Leaders’ Summit, Canada and India agreed to formally begin discussions for an ambitious Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which will help Canada achieve its aim of more than doubling bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030.
