Switzerland : According to officials, a fatal explosion occurred in the ski resort town of Crans-Montana in the early hours of Thursday, killing many people and gravely injuring many more. According to initial reports, the explosion, which also resulted in a fire, occurred in a pub inside the upscale Apline ski resort.

Crans-Montana is well-known among tourists, particularly British people, and is located in Switzerland’s Sierre area, almost two hours from the capital, Bern. The explosion occurred at a time when people were gathering in Crans-Montana for New Year’s festivities.

 

According to a Swiss police spokesman, the explosion occurred around 1.30 a.m. (local time) (00:30 GMT) at the Le Constellation bar, which is well-known among tourists. The official stated that a rescue operation has been initiated and that an investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the explosion.

“There has been an explosion of unknown origin,” said Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesman in Wallis canton, southwestern Switzerland. “There are several injured, and several dead.”

According to media accounts, the bomb occurred in the bar’s basement, which can accommodate approximately 400 people. Although police have yet to reveal how many people were killed in the tragedy, some reports suggest that the death toll could be as high as the 2012 Sierre bus catastrophe in Switzerland, which killed up to 28 people.
