New Zealand Defence Alliance: New Zealand is considering joining a new regional defence alliance with Australia and Fiji, a move that could strengthen security cooperation across the Pacific while drawing greater geopolitical attention to the region.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon stated that the administration will thoroughly consider the issue before making any formal commitments. Australia and Fiji signed the Ocean of Peace Alliance earlier this week, which includes a mutual defence pledge in the event of an attack on either country. The pact also allows more Pacific states to join in the future.

Luxon stated that New Zealand will begin negotiations with Australia and Fiji to better understand the framework and its long-term advantages. Any decision to join would require Cabinet approval after a thorough study of the treaty’s strategic implications.

Australia and Fiji have described the Ocean of Peace Alliance as a significant step in preserving peace and sovereignty in the Pacific. Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka hailed the agreement as historic, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it represents a shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
