Meanwhile, in Iraq, a French soldier was killed and many others injured in an incident in the Erbil area.
At the same time, Italy announced that it had began planning the return of troops stationed at its military post in Erbil.
According to the Italian ANSA news agency, which cited Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, the removal of the remaining contingent was previously planned before the missile damaged the facility.
“A missile struck our facility in Erbil. There have been no casualties or injuries among Italian personnel. “They are all safe,” Crosetto remarked, as reported by ANSA.
Crosetto stated that Italy had already begun reducing its military presence in the region due to security concerns.
The ministry stated that 102 troops had returned to Italy and another 40 have relocated to Jordan.A return of the existing 141 was already planned,” he said, stressing that the operation was logistically hard because troops could not be flown out straight and would have to leave by ground, most likely via Turkey.
Crosetto also verified that the complex in Erbil has multiple US military outposts and is part of NATO’s presence in the region.
The developments occurred as the United States and Israel intensified their military campaign against Iran. According to reports, more than 1,300 people have been killed and over 10,000 injured as a result of the strikes.
Tehran has replied by launching drone and missile attacks on Israel, Iraq, and many Gulf countries that host US military assets.
Earlier, Iran’s official media stated that opposition fighters in western Iraq shot down a US military refuelling plane.
The United States Central Command reported the loss of a KC-135 refuelling aircraft while supporting operations in Iraq, but denied that hostile fire was involved.
“There were two aircraft engaged in the event. According to the announcement, one of the aircraft crashed in western Iraq, while the second landed safely. “This was not due to hostile or friendly fire,” CENTCOM stated on X.
Tensions are high in the Gulf after joint US-Israeli military operations murdered Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, on February 28.
Mojtaba Khamenei, stated
Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, stated that the government will continue to utilise the key Strait of Hormuz as leverage during the battle.Dear fighter brothers! The vast majority of the people want to continue the effective and regrettable defence. Furthermore, the leverage of shutting the Strait of Hormuz must be maintained,” he stated.
Khamenei further stated that Iran has selected potential targets if the conflict continues.Studies have been undertaken on the establishment of additional fronts in places where the adversary has little experience and is very susceptible, and their activation will take place if the state of conflict endures and in accordance with interests,” he stated.
However, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, later stated that Tehran had no intention of closing the Strait of Hormuz, although it reserved the right to preserve security in the canal.
“We are not going to close the Strait of Hormuz, but it is our inherent right to preserve the peace and security in this waterway, and it is our right,” stated the Turkish leader.Iran has no choice but to exercise its fundamental right to self-defence under the United Nations Charter and international law. Iran completely respects and continues to be devoted to the principles of free navigation under maritime law. However, the current situation in the region, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, is not the outcome of Iran’s legitimate exercise of its right to self-defence,” he continued.
