UAE Consulate in Iraq Attacked by Drone After Government Rejects Role in Regional Tensions

Erbil [Iraq]: A diplomatic outpost of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was attacked in a drone strike early Tuesday, barely hours after the Gulf nation expressed frustration over being targeted “unfairly” in the ongoing Middle Eastern crisis.

The UAE consulate in Iraq’s Kurdish region suffered structural damage during the aerial strike. According to official accounts, there were “no casualties” from the incident.

This incident follows a substantial escalation in regional tensions, which was sparked by joint US-Israeli military operations against Iran on February 28.

UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the strike

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the strike, stating that it was a “dangerous escalation and a threat to regional security and stability.” The ministry added that “targeting diplomatic missions and premises constitutes a flagrant violation of all international norms and laws.”

While the UAE has severely denounced the violation of diplomatic immunity, the foreign ministry has not identified the origin of the drone or the party responsible for its launch.

The strike began Tuesday morning after the UAE officially complained on Monday that it was being targeted “in a very unwarranted manner.” The country has maintained that it does not want to be sucked into the conflict and has not participated in strikes on Iran.

Australia has announced the deployment of military assets to the UAE in order to strengthen its defensive capabilities in the face of escalating threats. On Monday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia will send missiles and aircraft to the region as a precaution. Our engagement is completely defensive,” Albanese told reporters, noting that the decision was made “in defence of Australians in the region as well as our friends in the United Arab Emirates.”

As part of its deployment, Australia will send a Boeing-built E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control system. The plane will first operate for four weeks to monitor and safeguard the airspace above Gulf nations.

The Prime Minister also indicated that sophisticated medium-range air-to-air missiles would be given to the UAE. This agreement follows a high-level phone chat between Albanese and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Although the confrontation has been ongoing for more than ten days, US President Donald Trump expressed optimism that it will be resolved soon.”We are putting an end to all of this threat once and for all, and as a result, American families will pay less for oil and gas,” stated the US President.

Later that day, the President described the military intervention in Iran as a “short-term excursion” to handle regional dangers. We went on a small trip [to the Middle East] to get rid of some evil. And, as you will see, it will be a short-term excursion,” Trump said.
