Iran Selects Mojtaba Khamenei as New Supreme Leader: reports state Media

Tehran [Iran]: The Assembly of Experts has nominated Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Iranian official media reports.

Iran’s Assembly appointed Ayatollah Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Leader .

Press TV announced on X that “Iran’s Assembly of Experts has appointed Ayatollah Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Leader of the Islamic Republic.”

Mojtaba Khamenei is Ali Khamenei’s second oldest son.

According to Al Jazeera Breaking News, Iran’s Assembly of Experts has urged on Iranians to retain unity and reaffirm support for Khamenei.

 

According to Israeli media, Mojtaba has a more hardline stance than his father and is responsible for the brutal crackdowns on Iranian protestors.

In November 2019, the US Treasury Department imposed penalties on Mojtaba. Despite never having been elected or nominated to a government position, he was chosen to represent the then-Supreme Leader on an official basis.

The US Treasury also stated that the then-Supreme Leader delegated some of his leadership responsibilities to Mojataba Khamenei, who collaborated closely with the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and the Basij Resistance Force (Basij) to advance his father’s destabilising regional ambitions and oppressive domestic goals.

According to reports, Mojtaba Khamenei has access to luxurious houses in London as well as accounts in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

The news comes after US President Donald Trump declared his desire to personally select Iran’s next Supreme Leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israel combined military assault last week, according to Axios.

In an exclusive interview with Axios, Trump stated that he wants to play a part in appointing Iran’s next leader, drawing parallels to his engagement in political developments in Venezuela in January following the abduction of former President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by US forces.

He also attacked the potential succession of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, who is considered a strong contender for the job.They are squandering time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. “I have to be involved in the appointment, just like Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela,” Trump remarked, according to Axios.

Trump stated

Trump described Mojtaba Khamenei as “unacceptable” and stated that he would prefer a leader who could bring “harmony and peace” to Iran, warning that continuing his father’s policies could lead to future conflict with the US.

“I find Khamenei’s son abhorrent. According to Axios, the US President stated, “We want someone who will bring harmony and peace to Iran.”
