Kyiv [Ukraine] : Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and almost four years later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that he thinks Russian President Vladimir Putin “has already started” World War III. He emphasised that Kyiv is serving as a frontline to keep the conflict from spreading around the world.
Zelenskyy stated
Zelenskyy stated that there are varying views on whether the conflict in Ukraine qualifies as a third world war, but he emphasised that, in his opinion, the process has already started in a series of posts on X summing his recent interview with the BBC.
“There are differing perspectives about World War III. I believe Putin has already initiated it. The question is, how much area can he grab, and how can we stop him? Not to prevent Russia from winning, but because Russia wishes to impose its own reality and modify people’s lives in ways that they choose and select for themselves. That is why I believe, and have long believed, that Putin has already initiated this conflict. And we’re keeping him from expanding this into a larger, full-fledged World War III. “Today, we are the outpost that stops Putin,” the Ukrainian President stated in his message.
His comments come one day before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022.

Zelenskyy underlined the importance of improving Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and voiced regret that international partners had yet to issue licenses for domestic production of modern systems.Air defence is today’s most difficult topic. Unfortunately, partners have yet to grant licenses that would allow us to develop Patriot systems or, at the very least, missiles for existing systems. So far, we have not had any success with this,” he said, referring to the US-made MIM-104 Patriot system.

Zelenskyy emphasised the need for increased support in securing Ukraine’s airspace to protect civilians and maintain economic stability throughout the continuing conflict. How can we strengthen Ukraine in this war? The answer is obvious: close the sky. If civilians are protected, our rear is secure, people are working, children are attending school, the economy is operating, there is money, and taxes are paid to the front. In this way, we strengthen our army. Unfortunately, this is not currently the situation. “We need licenses, at the very least, for the missiles,” he wrote.
Zelenskyy’s comments highlight Ukraine’s persistent difficulty in strengthening its defences against Russian strikes.
