Trump Applauds Japan PM Takaichi After Massive Election Triumph

US President Donald Trump hailed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her coalition for their “landslide victory” in Japan’s general election on Sunday (local time), praising her leadership and describing the result as historic.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her Coalition on a LANDSLIDE Victory in today’s very important vote.” He referred to Takaichi as “a highly respected and very popular Leader” and stated that her choice to hold an election “paid off big time.”

Trump Calls Two-Thirds Majority a Historic Mandate

Trump remarked that Takaichi’s party now has a two-thirds supermajority in the legislature, calling it “a HISTORIC TWO THIRDS SUPERMAJORITY — the first time since World War II.” He went on to say, “It was an honor to endorse you and your coalition. I wish you much success in passing your Conservative, Peace Through Strength Agenda.”

Trump praised Japanese voters, saying the “wonderful people of Japan” voted enthusiastically and will “always have my strong support.”

Trump Praises Japanese Voters and Leadership

US President Donald Trump praised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Sunday, as the country held a critical legislative election.

Trump recalled his recent trip to Japan, when he and his entourage were “extremely impressed” with Takaichi’s leadership, and expressed his excitement about welcoming her to the White House on March 19.

During a campaign, he said, “As President of the United States of America, it is my honor to give a Complete and Total Endorsement of her, and what her highly respected Coalition is representing.”

He closed the message with a strong vote of confidence in the Japanese leader, saying in big letters, “SHE WILL NOT LET THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN DOWN!” and wishing voters luck in what he described as their “very important Sunday Vote.”

In Japan’s general election on Sunday, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) earned a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives, giving Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi a strong mandate to advance her conservative policy agenda, according to Kyodo News.

Crossing the two-thirds mark of 310 members in the 465-member lower house permits the LDP to pursue constitutional amendment and enact legislation, even if it is rejected by the upper House of Councillors, where the ruling coalition is still in minority. According to Kyodo News, the LDP is the first postwar Japanese party to win by such a large margin.

The landslide victory represents a significant rise above the party’s pre-election strength of 198 seats and was mainly attributed to Takaichi’s personal popularity. The LDP and its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), will have an overwhelming presence in the chamber, bolstering Takaichi’s position since taking office in October.

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s upcoming visit to Washington, her first since taking office, will come before US President Donald Trump’s planned trip to China in April, according to Kyodo News, as Beijing has taken an increasingly hardline stance over her comments on a potential Taiwan Strait crisis.

Trump has often complimented Japan’s commitment to large-scale investments in the United States, which was a significant component of a trade agreement negotiated last summer in response to his tariff threats against Tokyo, according to Kyodo News.

Since her first day in office, Trump has publicly praised Takaichi, the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, portraying her as a protegee of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom he had a close personal relationship during his first term.

Trump Administration Sees Alliance as Stronger Than Ever

The US State Department stated on Sunday that the administration looked forward to furthering “U.S. security and economic priorities, as well as our shared interests, in the Indo-Pacific and globally” with Japan, according to Kyodo News.

According to Kyodo News, a State Department spokesman defined the US-Japan alliance as “the cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity” in the area, and stated that it “has never been stronger.”
