Begum Khaleda Zia, the former prime minister of Bangladesh, passed away while receiving treatment at Apollo Hospital in Dhaka following a protracted illness. She was eighty years old. According to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), its chairperson died on Tuesday around six in the morning.
After being admitted on November 23 with illnesses damaging her heart and lungs, Zia had been undergoing therapy for 36 days. The first female prime minister of Bangladesh has long struggled with a number of health issues, including diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and long-term problems with her kidneys, lungs, heart, and eyes.
A medical board led by cardiologist Shahabuddin Talukder oversaw her treatment, which included physicians from Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, and Australia. Earlier this month, efforts were made to transport her abroad for advanced treatment, but the plan was scrapped due to her poor condition.
Only two days ago, her personal physician verified that the former Prime Minister was in “extremely critical” health. In a Facebook statement, the BNP stated that physicians confirmed the former Prime Minister deceased around 6 a.m. today.

“Her condition had gotten worse since late Monday night. A special aircraft from Qatar had been held on standby to transport her to London for further treatment, but a medical board did not approve her transfer from Evercare Hospital to Dhaka International Airport,” according to the article.
Khaleda Zia’s legal issues
Khaleda Zia was Bangladesh’s prime minister from 1991 to 1996, and again from 2001 to 2006. Zia was also convicted in 2018 in a 2008 corruption case concerning the theft of orphanage funds.

Zia was freed from house detention after Sheikh Hasina was removed from office. Zia’s prison sentence was suspended by the Awami League leader in 2020 because to health concerns, provided that her longtime rival refrained from traveling outside or engaging in political activities.
In January of this year, Zia’s previous 10-year prison sentence in the corruption case was reversed by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. The BNP has continuously insisted that the cases were politically motivated, claiming that Zia was singled out for political purposes by Hasina’s administration at the time.
She was the first female prime minister in the nation and the widow of Ziaur Rahman, an army commander and former president of Bangladesh.
