"You Had Osman Hadi Dead To Derail Polls": Serious Allegations Against the Yunus Government

Days after Bangladesh student activist Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in the head in Dhaka, his family accused a faction inside the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus of organizing the killing in order to undermine the approaching national election in February.

On December 12, Osman Hadi, the spokesperson for Inquilab Moncho, a cultural organization founded during the 2024 July movement that resulted in the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was shot at close range in Dhaka. On December 18, he was evacuated to Singapore and died while receiving treatment. The murder of Osman Hadi sparked violent riots, with mobs assaulting the headquarters of significant media and cultural institutions.

Sharif Omar Hadi, Osman Hadi’s brother, criticized the government during a rally in Dhaka’s Shahbagh

Sharif Omar Hadi, Osman Hadi’s brother, criticized the government during a rally in Dhaka’s Shahbagh. “You killed Osman Hadi, and now you are attempting to derail the election by using this as an issue,” Omar added, leveling a broad indictment against the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Yunus.

Omar stated that Osman wanted the national election to be place by February and that the authorities must provide a swift trial while avoiding interruptions to the election atmosphere.

“Ensure a fast trial for the killers so that the election environment is not jeopardized. The government has failed to demonstrate any discernible progress. If justice for Osman Hadi is not served, you, too, will be forced to abandon Bangladesh one day,” he added, presumably referring to Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after widespread protests last year forced a regime change.

Omar claimed that his brother was slain because he refused to submit to any agency or “foreign masters”.

According to The Daily Star, Inquilab Moncho member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber claimed that Osman’s death is part of a “deep conspiracy” to undermine the July uprising’s gains and Bangladesh’s sovereignty. He said that international intelligence services and “fascist associates” operating within the country were involved in Osman’s death. Jaber also requested that the government present the killers to the public through an international-standard inquiry within a set time frame, or they will escalate their protest.

The protesters stated that they would remain in the streets and fight until justice was served.

Inquilab Moncho’s leaders have stated that no activities will be held on December 25, when Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, is slated to return to the nation. The platform’s leaders expressed hope that Tarique Rahman will support their cause.
