Masood Azhar, the leader of the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), has revealed that he paid a terrible price for attempting to flee from jail in Jammu and Kashmir in the 1990s.

In an audio clip of his speech, he could be heard detailing his failed effort to escape from jail by constructing a tunnel, which was most likely from an event in Pakistan. His voice boomed across the loudspeaker, indicating that the event was happening outdoors.
Intelligence sources have confirmed that the audio clip of the terrorist most wanted by India, who masterminded the attacks on Parliament in 2001 and Mumbai in 2008, among others, is authentic.
Mazood Azhar broke down in the recording as he recalled how his attempt to escape from Jammu and Kashmir’s Kot Bhalwal jail by constructing a tunnel failed on the day he planned to do so.

This jail in Jammu is a high-security facility that has housed some of India’s most wanted terrorists.
In the audio clip, the JeM chief stated that he had been excavating a tunnel in Kot Bhalwal for quite some time using tools he had obtained. On the day he planned to escape through the tunnel, the jail officials discovered what he had been up to.
The repercussions of attempting to defy the law, especially by a cold, deadly terrorist like him, were terrible.

He claimed that he still dreaded the jail officials, who had assaulted him and other terrorists for plotting an escape.
“The tunnel was discovered by them on the last day of my escape plan,” the Pakistan-based terrorist confessed before breaking down.
Masood Azhar was heard saying in the audio clip that after the unsuccessful escape attempt, the jail became a difficult environment for him and a few other detainees due to strong rule enforcement, including physical punishment for transgressions. He claimed he was chained up and that everyday tasks were restricted.
The terrorist’s statement confirmed what India has always claimed: Pakistan uses terror as a deliberate state policy to harass India.
Masood Azhar arrived in India in February 1994, posing as someone else and carrying a Portuguese passport. His goal was to propagate jihad in Jammu and Kashmir and recruit terrorists.
The same year, he was detained in Anantnag. From 1994 to 1999, he remained in jail. During this imprisonment, terrorists made several unsuccessful efforts to release him.
However, following the kidnapping of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in December 1999, the government freed Masood Azhar in exchange for the hostages. Following that, he created the terrorist organization JeM. He has since been linked to a number of terror acts in India and is now considered one of the country’s most wanted terrorists.
At least ten of his family members were murdered in India’s cruise missile strikes on terror infrastructure deep within Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, which was launched in reaction to the death of 26 civilians by JeM terrorists in Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir. Four terrorists, whom he described as “close aides,” were also killed in the strike, Masood Azhar stated in a statement issued a day after India began Operation Sindoor.
