According to the statement, the resolution seeks to repeal the additional 25% “secondary” duties imposed on India on August 27, 2025, on top of earlier reciprocal tariffs that raised duties on many Indian-origin products to 50% under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act .

“India is a critical economically, culturally, and strategic partner, and these illegal tariffs are a tax on everyday North Texans who are already struggling with rising costs,” the congressman said.

Meanwhile, Indian-American Congressman Krishnamoorthi stated that the tariffs were “counterproductive, disrupt supply chains, harm American workers, and drive up costs for consumers,” and that removing them would assist boost US-India cooperation in both economics and security.

“Rather than furthering American interests or security, these levies disrupt supply chains, hurt American workers, and raise consumer costs. Ending these harmful tariffs will allow the United States to work with India to pursue our common economic and security interests,” Krishnamoorthi remarked.

The resolution is part of a larger Democratic effort to fight Trump’s unilateral trade policies and reset America’s relations with India.

Earlier in October, Congressman Ro Khanna, 19 other members of Congress, Ross, Veasey, and Krishnamoorthi had called on the President to undo his tariff measures and mend frayed bilateral relations with India.

“Ending Trump’s India tariffs is part of a broader effort by congressional Democrats to reclaim Congress’ constitutional authority over trade and to stop the President from using emergency powers to unilaterally impose his misguided trade policies,” the press release said.

Trump placed a 25% duty on Indian imports earlier in August, which went into effect on August 1. A few days later, he increased the tariff by an additional 25%, citing India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total to 50%. Trump said that these purchases support Moscow’s military effort in Ukraine.
