US President Donald Trump hinted on Monday that he may put new taxes on agricultural imports, including rice from India and fertilizer from Canada. Speaking at a White House meeting, Trump stated that India should not be allowed to “dump” rice into the US and that a tariff should be put on New Delhi.
Farmers have pointed to lower rice prices, stating that imports from India, Vietnam, and Thailand are undercutting local supplies. He stated he’d “take care” of the situation.
“Why is India allowed to dump rice into the United States? They must pay tariffs. Do they have a rice exemption? During the meeting, Trump asks US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

In response, Bessent stated that no such exemptions existed and that the US was in the process of negotiating a trade agreement with India.
Trump stated that India cannot continue dumping rice in the United States.
US President Donald Trump will impose tariffs on Canadian fertilisers.
The US President also stated that tariffs would be applied on Canadian fertilizer imports. He stated that the action will encourage local production.
“A lot of it comes in from Canada, and we’ll end up putting very severe tariffs on it, if necessary, because that’s how you want to bolster here. And we can accomplish it here. “We can all do that here,” he stated.

Trump made these statements when announcing USD 12 billion in further support for American farmers.
Notably, farmers in the United States are under constant pressure due to inflation and market issues caused by tariff policy. Negotiations with India and Canada are still ongoing to reach a trade agreement.
India-US trade agreement
Earlier this year, Trump imposed a 50% duty on Indian items, citing the country’s restrictive trade practices and massive energy imports. A US group is set to visit India this week for additional consultations.
