US President Donald Trump stepped up his criticism of Somali immigrants on Tuesday, telling a Cabinet meeting that he does not want Somali migrants in the country and accusing them of relying excessively on welfare while offering nothing in return.
His comments came as federal agents planned to conduct a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota, home to the country’s biggest Somali American community.
“They contribute nothing. “I do not want them in our country,” Trump told reporters near the end of the lengthy meeting.
He went on to say, “Their country is not excellent for a reason.” Your country smells, and we don’t want them in ours.
Trump also renewed his assaults on Ilhan Omar, whose family fled Somalia’s civil war and resided in a Kenyan refugee camp before settling in the United States.

“We can go either direction or the other, and we’re going to go in the wrong direction if we keep taking in garbage into our country,” tweeted Donald Trump. “Ilhan Omar is shit. “Her friends are garbage.” She’s garbage.
Speaking more about Somali immigration, he stated, “These aren’t people that work. These aren’t people that say, ‘Let’s go, c’mon.Let us make this location awesome. “These are people who do nothing but complain.”
The remarks came after the administration’s decision last week to withdraw long-standing deportation protections for Somali nationals, which had been in effect since 1991, when Somalia sank into civil war.
The planned enforcement operation in Minnesota, first reported by the New York Times, is intended to target Somali immigrants in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area who have final deportation orders. According to officials, hundreds of people could be targeted, and incidental arrests may occur.
Last week, Trump threatened in a social media post to send Somalis “back to where they came from,” stating that Minnesota, which has the largest Somali community in the United States, is “a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.”
