Syria Arrests Two Suspected Daesh Members : Syrian security forces detained two alleged members of the Daesh extremist group in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor. Authorities accuse the couple of participating in a number of targeted assassinations, including an incident that murdered Ibrahim Al-Jassem, a member of the country’s Ministry of Defense.

Syria’s internal security forces reported the arrests on Sunday. Officials stated that the individuals were apprehended following intelligence monitoring, but did not reveal their identities or offer any information about the operation.

The case comes as Syria’s new authorities continue to disclose arrests of suspected Daesh members and related cells. Following the overthrow of Bashar Assad, the government assumed control in late 2024.

Syria Arrests Suspects in Deir Ezzor Killing Cases

According to internal security forces, the two suspects are accused of carrying out a string of assassinations in Deir Ezzor governorate. The most recent example highlighted by officials concerned Ibrahim Al-Jassem from Mayadin.

According to officials, the arrests were made as a result of intelligence surveillance. However, the release did not state when the alleged deaths occurred, how many events the suspects are suspected of engaging in, or whether additional persons were involved.

The claims position the case among the security issues confronting Syria’s authorities as they fight Daesh and linked networks. The group has lost control of the vast territory it formerly controlled, but it still claims credit for occasional operations, notably those targeting Syrian security forces.

The authorities had already tied Daesh to a blast in Damascus during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit in July. Syrian officials claimed at the time that they had dissolved the cell responsible for the strike.

The most recent arrests are part of a larger series of operations launched by the country’s new administration against suspected Daesh members. The current statement, however, does not clarify whether the two inmates are involved in the Damascus bombing or any other previously reported crime.

Syria Arrests Highlight Ongoing Daesh Threat

Daesh captured large areas of Syria and neighbouring Iraq in 2014. Its territorial control was later brought to an end, with the group defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019.

The organization has remained a security risk in spite of those losses. According to information supplied by government and foreign press, it periodically claims assaults, including those that target Syrian security personnel.

There were around 3,000 Daesh militants in Syria, according to a report submitted to the UN Security Council in July. According to the same claim, a number of assaults on Syrian authorities, including purported schemes aimed against President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, had been foiled.

The two individuals detained in Deir Ezzor may or may not have been included in the stated fighter estimate, though.

Syrian officials have not announced any judicial hearings in this matter or disclosed any more information on the evidence against the individuals. A court’s verdict of guilt is not the same as their reported arrests and the charges against them.

As of right now, authorities have connected the two prisoners to purported targeted assassinations in Deir Ezzor, including the demise of Ibrahim Al-Jassem, a member of the military ministry. Any more details on the case will rely on what the authorities publish.
