Satya Nadella Wins Trump’s Technology Honour Amid Microsoft Green Card Row

US President Donald Trump honoured Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation at the White House, despite the fact that his government has barred Microsoft from a program that allows corporations to sponsor foreign workers for permanent residency. The two acts have sparked concerns about the administration’s stance on skilled immigration and the technology industry.

The suspension impacts the Permanent Labour Certification (PERM) program, which is a required step in certain employment-based green card applications. Vise President JD Vance stated that the decision stemmed from an ongoing inquiry into Microsoft’s use of the immigration system.

Vance accused the corporation of laying off American workers while continuing to hire foreign specialists through visa programs. Microsoft denied complaints about its employment methods, claiming that it adheres to visa regulations and compensates foreign workers the same as employees doing identical duties.

During the award event, Trump lauded Nadella’s contributions to the technology sector but did not mention the immigration dispute. He praised Microsoft software as a tool that has benefited businesses, students, and consumers worldwide.

Why the US Suspended Microsoft’s Green Card Sponsorship

Vance stated that Microsoft lay off 6,000 US employees last year while acquiring 6,300 H-1B visas and roughly 3,000 green cards. He contended that employers should not exploit immigration programs to replace American employees with foreign workers.

Microsoft provided a different account of its visa applications. According to the corporation, almost 80% of the 6,000 H-1B applications it submitted last fiscal year were intended to extend or change the status of existing employees. According to the corporation, applications for new employees accounted for approximately 1% of its US staff. It further said that these persons were already legally present in the country.

Microsoft also asserted that its H-1B petitions were solely filed for individuals who met the visa category’s standards. The corporation stated that foreign employees were paid the same as other workers performing comparable jobs.

The H-1B program allows US firms to hire foreign workers in specialised occupations. PERM serves a different purpose in the employment-based green card process, requiring firms to demonstrate that eligible American workers are unavailable for the position.

The suspension does not imply that previously accepted green card cases will be revoked. However, international employees seeking permanent residency through affected firms may encounter ambiguity.

US Representative Pramila Jayapal, the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee’s immigration subcommittee, slammed the decision. She contended that restricting legal immigration paths would make it more difficult for the country to attract skilled workers and retain technological innovation.

Microsoft Green Card Sponsorship Dispute Expands to Other Companies

Vance didn’t just mention Microsoft. He also stated that Adobe, Cognisant, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, and Capgemini have been suspended from the PERM program. According to the source, the corporations did not reply immediately to demands for comment.

The regulations could have an impact on Indian IT experts who are seeking permanent residency through their employers. The specific repercussions will depend on the scope and duration of the restrictions, as well as the status of individual applications.

The administration has also proposed further policies impacting foreign students and professionals. The Department of Homeland Security suggested a $70,000 cost for international students seeking US work authorisation via the Optional Practical Training program. Vance has also requested a probe of nine universities, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for their use of J-1 exchange visas.

Despite the restrictions, Trump’s award ceremony acknowledged some technology luminaries born outside of the United States. Nadella shared the National Medal of Technology and Innovation with Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, who was born in Texas. Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Jensen Huang, and Lisa Su all received the National Medal of Science from President Trump. Musk was born in South Africa; Brin in Russia; and Huang and Su in Taiwan.

Vance stated that the administration would continue to promote Microsoft and have a solid connection with the corporation. Nadella praised Trump for the award on social media, expressing hope for future technological advancements and US prosperity.

The opposing acts result in Microsoft facing immigration restrictions while its CEO being recognised for his contributions to American innovation.
