Despite Israel’s order to close it, the United Kingdom will continue to operate its Consulate General in East Jerusalem as an independent mission. Ed Miliband, the British Foreign Minister, stated that the mission would continue to serve the Palestinian people.

The decision was made after Israel ordered the British consulate to close on Thursday. The move came after Britain said that sanctions will be imposed on West Bank settlements.

Miliband said that Britain had recently removed numerous staff members and their families from the mission. He did, however, reaffirm that the United Kingdom intended to re-establish its presence in the region.

UK Consulate in Jerusalem to Continue Work

The British government said the facility will remain open and that work in Jerusalem will continue. Miliband stated that Britain would enhance its presence in the coming months rather than taking immediate retaliatory action against Israel.

“We will work in the coming months to rebuild our presence,” Miliband stated, adding that Britain would not take reciprocal action while talks with Israel were ongoing and credible.

The situation indicates a deterioration in relations between the two countries. The consulate controversy arose when Britain revealed plans to impose penalties on West Bank settlements.

Britain maintains that its mission in East Jerusalem should continue to operate despite Israel’s orders.

The UK has also maintained talks with the Israeli government on the subject. Stephen Doughty, the British minister for the Middle East, expressed sincere remorse over Israel’s actions regarding the consulate.

UK Consulate in Jerusalem Maintains Presence

Doughty stated that British employees were continuing their job and that the building remained operational. He emphasised that Britain had a presence in Jerusalem and wanted that activity to continue.

“Our building remains open, our staff remain doing important work,” Doughty stated. He also stated that Britain maintained a presence in Jerusalem and deemed it necessary for its activities to continue.

The dispute sparked concern in Israel that Britain may respond by withdrawing Israeli officials from London. However, Miliband stated that Britain would not adopt reciprocal actions while the talks were ongoing.

For the time being, the UK says its primary goal is to continue its mission and rebuild its presence in Jerusalem. The administration is also still in conversation with Israel about the consulate’s future.

Britain’s decision to keep the mission operational implies that its work for the Palestinian people will continue regardless of the diplomatic controversy over the building.
