India’s Record ODI Chase: Gill’s 223* and Rohit’s Century Power India to Historic Win

India set a new ODI record against the West Indies by chasing down 407 runs with eight wickets in hand in the second ODI at Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium. Shubman Gill led the assault with an unbeaten 223 off 113 balls, while Rohit Sharma made a stunning century to help India achieve the goal with 39 balls remaining. The victory also sealed the series for India, as both sides put on a record-breaking batting show on a wicket that provided little assistance to the bowlers.

West Indies Post Record 406 Runs as Three Batters Score Centuries

After being asked to bat first, the West Indies placed a lot of pressure on India’s bowlers. Opener John Campbell set the tone with an aggressive century, scoring 101 runs despite losing his opener, Keacy Carty, early in the game.

Campbell had great backing from skipper Shai Hope, and the two contributed 110 runs for the second wicket. Their collaboration provided the visitors with a firm foundation and enabled the middle order to continue the attack without incurring needless risks.

Following Campbell’s departure, Hope joined forces with Amir Jangoo to seize control of the innings. The two batsmen put on a mammoth 182-run partnership, leaving the Indian bowlers trying to find breakthroughs in the middle overs.

Hope and Jangoo both achieved their centenaries, with Jangoo standing out. He scored 114 runs off just 77 deliveries, using an aggressive attitude throughout his innings. Hope also played an important part in putting the West Indies on track for a massive score.

India made considerable gains at the finish, with Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja collecting two wickets apiece. Gurnoor Brar also took two wickets but let up 96 runs in his ten overs, making it one of the most costly bowling spells by an Indian in ODI cricket.

The West Indies finally scored 406 runs, their biggest total in ODI history. The innings also helped to set a new record, with five hitters scoring centuries.

India’s Record ODI Chase Led by Gill and Rohit’s 255-Run Stand

Chasing a difficult target of 407, India required a solid start, and their first pair exceeded expectations. Gill and Rohit Sharma attacked the West Indies bowling from the start, putting together an incredible 255-run stand for the first wicket.

Their stand marked India’s second-highest opening partnership in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly still hold the record for most runs contributed (258).

Rohit was particularly spectacular, scoring a century in just 72 balls. The veteran hitter struck 101 runs in 75 deliveries, giving India the impetus it needed to chase down the massive goal. His performance also coincided with intense speculation regarding his future in international cricket.

Meanwhile, Gill delivered a superb effort that kept India well in charge. The 27-year-old skipper finished undefeated with 223 from 113 balls, blasting boundaries and sixes at regular intervals. According to the match report, his double century was the quickest in ODI history, and he broke Virender Sehwag’s record for the greatest individual score by an ODI skipper.

Following Rohit’s departure, Virat Kohli scored 29 runs to keep the chase going. Ruturaj Gaikwad then backed up Gill, remaining unbroken at 31 as India continued to control the affair.

India Seal the Series With a Historic Batting Performance

India finished the chase in just 43.3 overs, reaching 407 for two and won by eight wickets with 39 balls left. The outcome emphasised India’s batting performance against a West Indies team that had scored a record total.

Gill’s undefeated double century and Rohit’s century were critical to the victorious pursuit. Their opening pair had already given India a commanding lead, leaving the middle order to do the job without any strain.

The victory also handed India the series, as they easily overcame the West Indies’ big first-inning total. The match will be remembered for exceptional batting performances, including five individual centuries, as well as India’s successful pursuit of a target of more than 400 runs.
