Virat Kohli ODI Record: Kohli Becomes Fastest to 15,000 Runs

Virat Kohli created another milestone in his career during India’s first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. The Virat Kohli ODI record came as he became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 runs in ODI cricket, achieving the feat in 303 innings and surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous mark.

Kohli needed 59 runs before the match to break Tendulkar’s record. Kohli achieved 15,000 ODI runs in only 303 innings, whilst Tendulkar did so in 377 innings.

Virat Kohli ODI Record Comes During Match-Winning Knock

Kohli ended the match undefeated on 139 from 112 balls, with ten fours and nine sixes. His century was also his 55th in ODIs and 86th overall in international cricket.

India were chasing 296 after the West Indies reached their score, with Justin Greaves getting his first ODI century. Kuldeep Yadav also contributed significantly to India’s performance, taking four wickets.

The chase swiftly shifted in India’s favor as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill put up 75 runs for the first wicket. Gill then continued his innings alongside Kohli, scoring another 150 runs for the second wicket.

Gill hit 110 off 107 balls, his tenth ODI century. He reached fifty in 49 balls before speeding in the second part of his innings.

Kohli and Gill Power India to Eight-Wicket Win

Kohli took charge of the chase as the innings continued. He mixed rapid movement between the wickets with a number of boundaries, and his sixes were particularly aggressive.

He reached his half-century with 40 balls before advancing to his century. His century came off 74 deliveries, when he hammered Gudakesh Motie for a six over midwicket.

The Greenfield Stadium roared as Kohli achieved the historic feat. His unbroken 139 helped India complete the chase in 41.4 overs at 300 for two.

India won the first match by eight wickets and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

Kohli Joins Tendulkar in Elite ODI List

Kohli became only the second batsman in history to reach 15,000 runs in ODI cricket. Tendulkar is the only other player to have accomplished the milestone.

Kohli’s recent effort adds to his already impressive ODI record. His 139 not out contributed significantly to India’s victorious chase after the West Indies reached 296.

With two more matches left in the series, India will try to capitalise on their initial success. Kohli’s record-breaking performance has added another highlight to his ODI career.
