The Bank Strike planned for September 28 to 30 has been postponed after the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) held a meeting. The two sides agreed to form a high-level committee to discuss the demand for declaring the remaining Saturdays as holidays and work towards a solution acceptable to all stakeholders, including bank customers.
The ruling implies that bank unions’ intended strike and other agitation programs would be put on hold for the time being. Discussions will also continue on other union-related matters.
Bank Strike Deferred After Key Agreement
During the meeting, the IBA and UFBU decided to organise a high-level committee immediately to investigate the topic of a five-day banking work week. The committee will evaluate potential options, interact with stakeholders, and work to find a solution.
The two parties will also discuss the pressing concerns outlined in the March 8, 2024 meeting minutes. The goal is to remedy these issues as rapidly as feasible.
The performance-linked incentive (PLI) system for Scale IV and above officials was also considered during the conference. The IBA can initiate discussions about potential changes to the system and make recommendations to the government based on union and association concerns.
What the Bank Strike Decision Means for Customers
With the strike postponed, bank clients may continue to utilise their usual banking services. These include cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque clearing, UPI transactions, internet banking, and other services.
The proposed strike had been set for September 28-30. The Center has previously warned that a strike at this time may disrupt banking operations since it coincided with the semi-annual closure of accounts.
For clients, the postponement means that the scheduled three-day strike will not cause any immediate impact. Further choices will be based on negotiations between the IBA, UFBU, and other stakeholders.
Bank Unions’ Main Demands
Bank unions have been pushing for the quick introduction of a five-day work week, which has been delayed since the 2024 pay accord. They have also sought reforms to the performance-based reward structure, which they regard as unilateral and discriminatory.
Other requests include increased pensions, a consistent dearness allowance formula for retirees, and the reinstatement of the Old Pension Scheme in place of the National Pension System. Unions are also seeking a resolution to outstanding service and pay disputes.
The Center has asked bank employees to call off the upcoming strike, citing that many issues have already been resolved through discussions and welfare measures.
The government also said that public sector banks hired over 4.83 lakh people between FY15 and FY26. According to the report, the Staff Welfare Fund would be boosted by 56% in August 2024, along with steps to increase pensions, improve medical insurance, promote and transfer policies, and provide for exceptional leave.
The recent agreement between the IBA and the UFBU puts the intended strike on hold while negotiations over the outstanding demands continue.
