On Wednesday, Trump personally greeted Xi and the first lady of China on the Joint Base Andrews tarmac. A 100-foot red carpet, US service men, a military flyover by two B-1 bombers, and the national flags and anthems of both nations were all part of the arrival celebration.

Xi and Trump will have another chance to talk about some of the most significant issues between Beijing and Washington during their visit. In less than half a year, this is their second summit.

One of the primary subjects is anticipated to be trade. In order to give themselves more time for talks, the US and China have also decided to prolong their tariff truce through January.

Xi Jinping Visit Comes as Trade Truce Is Extended

Beijing and Washington have decided to prolong the current trade agreement, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. After meeting with He Lifeng, the vise premier of China, he made the announcement.

The “Busan Agreement,” as it was called, was set to expire on November 10. Bessent stated that the two parties talked about the possibility of eventually coming to a more comprehensive trade deal, but he did not specify if that would occur.

The leaders are also anticipated to talk on export licenses for chips. On that matter, no final decision has been reached. According to officials quoted by Reuters, US officials have already ruled out trading Washington’s restrictions on rare earth supplies for other concessions from Beijing.

Additionally, the two nations are thinking about reducing their tariffs on a certain set of “non-strategic” commodities. Businesses in both economies may profit from such an action.

Another topic that is anticipated to be discussed is artificial intelligence. New AI models from the two nations as well as potential control of Chinese open-source AI systems might be discussed. No agreement on these concepts has been verified by US officials.

Additionally, Washington is still putting pressure on Beijing for supplying Mexican drug traffickers with chemicals that are precursors to fentanyl. It is anticipated that Trump would bring up the situations of Americans incarcerated in Chinese facilities.
