US Nuclear Strategy Review Raises Concerns Over Tactical Nuclear Weapons

The US nuclear strategy review now being prepared by the Pentagon could increase the risk of nuclear escalation, nuclear policy analyst Joe Cirincione has warned. He said the plan to give President Donald Trump more options during a crisis could make nuclear weapons easier to consider.

The review is led by Elbridge Colby, Undersecretary of Defence for Policy. Colby has stated that the Pentagon wants to increase the president’s options at various stages of a battle.

Experts in nuclear policy have expressed reservations about the concept. According to Cirincione, a larger range of nuclear choices could blur the distinction between conventional and nuclear conflict.

US Nuclear Strategy Review Could Expand Nuclear Options

The review may include low-yield nuclear weapons, sometimes known as tactical nuclear weapons. Unlike massive strategic weapons, these weapons are intended to be used against targets in a specific region or battlefield.

Supporters of tactical nuclear weapons say they will provide the United States greater options for responding during a confrontation. They contend that if Washington could reply at each level of an escalation, an adversary would reconsider.

Cirincione disagrees with the claim. He claimed that making nuclear weapons easy to use could enhance the likelihood of a nuclear clash.

He also cited military war exercises that simulate the use of tactical nuclear weapons. According to Cirincione, practically all such exercises have resulted in the battle progressing fast into a larger global war.

The analyst also questioned how and when the US may utilise these weapons. He claimed that supporters of the notion have not adequately described the circumstances under which a tactical nuclear strike would be justified.

Cirincione also mentioned upcoming war games with artificial intelligence. He claimed that AI models led to global war in 95 percent of the situations examined in his study.

Tactical Nuclear Weapons Could Lead to Wider War

Other analysts have cautioned against viewing tactical nuclear weapons as restricted battlefield options. According to author Annie Jacobsen, a nuclear strike may soon escalate into a much wider confrontation.

Jacobsen has previously stated that even if NATO and China did not initially participate, the conclusion may still be terrible. In her opinion, once nuclear weapons are used in a battle, governments may struggle to control what follows next.

The Trump administration is likewise taking moves to develop and deploy such weapons. Its larger nuclear strategy may provide a foundation for their potential application.
