NATO Fighter Shoots Down Drone in Lithuania

A NATO fighter shoots down drone in Lithuania after an unmanned aircraft entered the country’s airspace shortly after midnight on Tuesday. The drone was brought down near Pratkunai village in southern Lithuania, close to Kaunas.

According to Lithuania’s national crisis management center, the drone may have arrived from adjacent Belarus. Officials have yet to identify where the aircraft originated from or who operated it.

The incident took place near Pratkunai, a village in southern Lithuania. Kaunas, the country’s second largest city, is close.

A drone alert had already been issued for Vilnius and the surrounding area. Authorities have not revealed any other information on the alert, or if the drone represented a direct threat to people or property.

The incident occurred as NATO continued to monitor the airspace over the Baltic region. NATO fighter planes have been conducting air patrols above Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia since the three Baltic states joined the alliance in 2004.

Baltic Airspace Faces Repeated Drone Incidents

NATO planes assigned to the Baltic Air Defence mission have already responded to drones invading the region’s airspace. Jets shot down rogue Ukrainian drones over Estonia in May, as well as over Latvia in June and August.

The frequent events have caused worry in countries bordering Russia and Belarus. Officials are concerned that the conflict in Ukraine would lead to additional airspace mishaps beyond Ukraine’s boundaries.

Ukraine has increased the number of long-range drone assaults against Russian sites. Some Ukrainian military drones have also flown over the skies of Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.

Kyiv has blamed Russia for several of these instances, claiming that electronic warfare may have tampered with the drones and altered their flight patterns.

Because of the broader security situation in the Baltic region, the most recent event in Lithuania is being closely monitored. NATO aircraft continue to be responsible for protecting the three Baltic countries’ airspace.

For the time being, the exact origin of the drone shot down near Pratkunai remains unknown. Lithuanian authorities are expected to discover additional information about the aircraft and how it entered the country’s airspace.
