34 Australians Missing in Nepal Floods as Search Efforts Face Limited Information

At least 34 Australians are missing in Nepal floods that have caused widespread destruction in the Himalayan region, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Thursday. Most of the missing Australians were travelling in separate pilgrimage and tour groups.

According to Wong, Australian authorities are attempting to locate the missing individuals and determine whether they are safe. However, officials have received limited information from disaster-hit areas due to the difficulty of access.

34 Australians Missing in Nepal Floods

According to officials, the missing Australians are among over 1,000 individuals reported missing in Nepal and China’s Tibet. At least 600 foreign nationals are said to have gone missing.

The calamity occurred when a massive mud and boulder mass toppled into a Himalayan river. The following floodwaters surged across cities and valleys, wreaking havoc across the area.

Wong explained that the 34 Australians were going in several groupings. At a news conference, Wong stated that access and information are limited due to the magnitude of the accident. Officials are working immediately to determine their safety and location.

15 Australians Were on a Mount Kailash Pilgrimage

According to a tourism organization in the region, 15 of the missing Australians were on a religious tour to Mount Kailash. Himalayan Glacier organised the group, which also included travellers from India, the United States, Canada, and Singapore.

According to Himalayan Glacier CEO Sagar Pandey, all 15 of the Australians are Indian-Australians. The group’s youngest member was a boy aged eleven.

The group had intended to travel to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, China. Both are significant religious attractions that attract pilgrims from various countries.

Pandey stated that he flew over the flood-affected area in a helicopter to examine conditions. He described the devastation as tremendous, and he believed there was only a slim chance that members of the group had survived.

Authorities Continue to Seek Information

Australian officials have yet to ascertain the condition or specific whereabouts of the missing nationals. The tough conditions in the impacted areas have hampered communication and access.
