Philippine President Marcos Yet to Decide on Successor Endorsement

Philippine President Marcos Jr. has stated that he will support a contender in the country’s 2028 presidential election, but he has yet to select who will receive his endorsement. His recent comments have injected uncertainty to the political race, which is already taking shape.

Marcos told foreign journalists in Manila on Friday, August 14, that it was too early to choose a candidate. He stated that he wanted to wait until the political environment was clearer before making a final decision.

Philippine President Marcos Keeps 2028 Presidential Successor Decision Open

Marcos is constitutionally limited to a single six-year presidential term, therefore he cannot run for reelection in 2028. His current term began in 2022 and ends in 2028.

Because of this constraint, his eventual support could be a deciding factor in the next presidential election. Marcos-backed candidates may obtain widespread political support.

The president also stated that he has not yet had discussions with potential candidates.

“You have to see how things really shape up,” Marcos said, according to Reuters.

He also stated that he had not met with anyone to ask if they planned to run for president. Marcos stated that his administration would eventually back the best candidate for the country, with the decision based on what would better Filipinos’ life.

Sara Duterte Rivalry Adds Pressure to the 2028 Election

Vice President Sara Duterte, who was once a political ally of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is one of the most influential figures in the 2028 presidential race.

The two leaders ran together in the 2022 election, but their friendship deteriorated afterward, turning them into political adversaries. Duterte revealed in February that she intends to run for president in 2028, and recent polls show increased support for her candidacy.

The political split between Marcos and Duterte has also resulted in multiple congressional probes and an impeachment action against the former president. Duterte is accused of financial irregularities, unlawful enrichment, and threats against President Marcos. She has denied all of the allegations.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte has also been transported to the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he is charged with murder in connection with his anti-drug campaign.

Philippine President Marcos May Influence the 2028 Presidential Race

Political observers believe that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos’ eventual endorsement could have a significant impact on the 2028 presidential race. However, his recent words indicate that he does not want to commit to any candidate while the political landscape remains unsettled.

For the time being, Marcos has stated that he plans to support a candidate from his political party, but he will wait until the election landscape becomes more obvious before making a decision.

As the 2028 Philippine presidential election approaches, alliances, public opinion, and political rivalry are projected to become more significant. Philippine President Marcos’ eventual endorsement could be one of the most carefully followed milestones in the country’s political future.
