Vietnam Anti-Submarine Warship : Vietnam has officially begun construction on its largest and most advanced domestically made anti-submarine frigate, a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to develop its defense industry and boost local naval manufacturing.

The new warship is being built in Da Nang City’s Song Thu Shipyard by the Defense Ministry. According to Vietnam’s military-run daily, Quan Doi Nhan Dan, the majority of the vessel’s weapons and military equipment would be created or constructed in the country.

The project demonstrates Vietnam’s rising emphasis on self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing, as well as its long-term strategy to lessen reliance on foreign military suppliers.

Several local defense and technology organizations will be involved in Vietnam’s anti-submarine warship project. During construction, Viettel, the military’s telecommunications and technology corporation, will collaborate with defense research institutes, production divisions, and the navy.

These organizations will assist in the design, development, and installation of weapons systems and other advanced military equipment for the frigate. Vietnam aspires to expand its technological knowledge and strengthen its indigenous defense sector by manufacturing more components locally.

For many years, Vietnam was largely reliant on imported military weapons, mainly from Russia. Building a large and advanced warship at home marks a significant step toward domestic production and technological independence.

The latest frigate project indicates that the country aims to move beyond assembling smaller vessels and instead create more complicated naval platforms domestically.

The government describes its defense industrial goal as being more “autonomous, self-reliant, self-strengthening, dual-use, and modern.” The new frigate is being offered as part of a larger national defense strategy.

Vietnam Anti-Submarine Warship Highlights Maritime Security Priorities

The project is especially important given Vietnam’s strategic position in the South China Sea, where maritime conflicts with China and other regional claimants continue to impact security planning.

Although the frigate’s technical details have not yet been revealed, an anti-submarine vessel is typically designed to detect and respond to underwater threats, safeguard naval assets, and boost maritime surveillance capabilities.

Local production of larger and more modern naval vessels may help minimize Vietnam’s vulnerability to international supply shortages and military import restrictions.

Vietnam is slated to exhibit its developing defense capabilities during the third Vietnam International Defense Expo, which will be held in Hanoi in December. The event will provide another opportunity for the government to promote its own defense sector while also strengthening partnerships with international suppliers.

Thus, the new battleship is more than just one naval building project. It represents Vietnam’s long-term goal of building a stronger, more self-sufficient defense industrial sector while also improving its naval capabilities and regional maritime security posture.
